Can diabetics take steroids?

My doctor is considering prescribing a steroid for my arthritis pain. I already have diabetes, and I've heard steroids can be problematic for blood sugar. Is it generally safe for diabetics to take steroids, or are there significant risks?

Yes, but only under very strict medical supervision. My doctor explained that steroids cause the liver to release extra glucose and make your cells very resistant to insulin, which shoots up your blood sugar levels. If you must take them, your doctor will likely need to temporarily adjust your insulin or diabetes medication dosage.

Please be very, very careful with this. I had to take a short course of steroids for an allergy, and my sugar levels went past 400 within two days, which was extremely scary. Never take any steroid pill or injection without your endocrinologist knowing about it and monitoring you closely.

I am diabetic and had to take steroids last year for a joint issue. During that time, I had to cut down on my carbs even more strictly and monitor my blood glucose four times a day. If your doctor prescribes them, make sure you have a clear plan on how to manage your daily diet and insulin during the course.

Don't stress yourself out too much if a doctor has prescribed steroids for an urgent issue. Sometimes they are absolutely necessary to cure other problems. Just make sure both your treating doctor and your diabetologist are talking to each other so your sugar levels don't fluctuate wildly. We will get through this safely.

If you are on steroids, your CGM app is going to show some crazy spikes, so don't panic immediately but stay alert. The modern way to handle this is to log your steroid timing and food intake diligently in your health tracker. Keep your doctor in the loop so they can look at your digital sugar logs and adjust your medicine.

When I was admitted to a reputed hospital for an infection, they had to give me steroids but they managed my blood sugar beautifully by checking it every few hours. You should definitely ask your doctor clearly about the exact side effects and how they plan to manage your sugar levels while you are on the prescription.
