Can diabetics take robitussin?

I have a terrible cough right now and it's getting very irritating. My regular go-to medicine is Robitussin. However, I developed diabetes last year. Is Robitussin safe for diabetics to use, or should I be looking for a specific kind?

My son has juvenile diabetes and when he gets a bad cough, we are always so careful. Many syrups have lots of sugar which can spike levels instantly. We always search for the sugar-free version of cough syrups and double check the dose with our pediatrician.

I know how annoying a constant cough is when you are trying to manage your sugar levels. Honestly, instead of regular Robitussin which is very sweet, I usually stick to steam inhalation and hot turmeric water with a bit of salt. If the cough is too severe, please ask your doctor for a diabetic-safe cough tablet instead.

Since I have high BP along with fluctuating blood sugar, I have to be extremely careful with cough and cold medications because some ingredients can raise blood pressure too. Please get your BP and sugar checked regularly when you are sick, and always show the bottle to your doctor before taking a dose.

I have been managing type 2 diabetes for 15 years now. Regular Robitussin is loaded with syrup, so it will definitely cause a temporary spike in your sugar. Look for the 'sugar-free' label specifically made for diabetics, or better yet, ask your doctor for a dry pill option instead of liquid syrup.

I track everything on my health apps and noticed that some standard liquid medicines definitely push up my daily carb limits. If you are taking standard Robitussin, keep a close watch on your continuous glucose monitor if you wear one. There are sugar-free alternatives that won't ruin your daily health tracking goals.

I deal with thyroid issues and my husband is diabetic, so we are always doing regular blood tests. When he gets a cold, we don't buy OTC syrups randomly because they can affect his fasting glucose. We always call our doctor first and then get a quick sugar test done the next morning to be safe.

Oh my god, I also had a terrible cough last week and was so scared to take any syrup! Did anyone else notice their fasting sugar going up even after taking just one spoonful of cough syrup? I ended up just drinking warm water because I got too anxious.

When you have a cold or cough, your sugar levels might go a bit crazy anyway because of the stress on your body. If the doc says it is fine to take the syrup, go ahead. I also try to do light walking inside the house to keep my blood circulation and glucose levels stable when I am unwell.

Most standard cough formulations like Robitussin do contain quite a bit of glucose or sucrose to mask the bitter taste. There are specific diabetic-safe formulations available in the market. It is highly advisable to consult your physician for a prescription instead of self-medicating.

Beta, these modern English syrups often have a lot of sugar in them which is not good for your diabetes. Along with whatever medicine your doctor prescribes, you can try slowly sipping warm water with a pinch of black pepper and ginger juice. It gives great relief to the throat without affecting your blood sugar.
