Can diabetics have sugar free ice cream?

I really miss having ice cream, especially during the summer. I see a lot of 'sugar-free' ice cream options in stores now. Is it actually safe for diabetics to have sugar-free ice cream, or is it better to just avoid it?

I have had diabetes for thirty years now. In my experience, sugar-free ice cream is fine as an occasional treat on hot days, but remember it still contains milk fats and carbs. Just don't make it a daily habit and keep your serving small.

My sugar levels were touching 280 last year but I brought them back to normal with strict control. I recently started having a small scoop of sugar-free vanilla ice cream on weekends and my levels didn't spike at all. It is definitely a safe option if your overall levels are stable.

Let us be clear, 'sugar-free' does not mean 'calorie-free' or 'carb-free'. These ice creams still have milk sugars and fats that can affect your weight and glucose levels. Read the label carefully and don't eat the whole tub in one go.

I always get so anxious reading the chemical names on sugar-free ice cream packs like maltodextrin or aspartame. I worry if they are secretly raising my sugar without me knowing. If you are anxious like me, maybe just test your sugar two hours after eating it to be completely sure.

Honestly, after a long exhausting week, a scoop of sugar-free ice cream is the only thing keeping me sane. It hasn't messed with my sugar readings yet, so I say go for it if you need a little mood booster!

Yes, they can have it occasionally, but check the nutrition label for hidden carbohydrates and total calories.

I was researching this for my mom because she loves ice cream. It seems most brands use sugar alcohols which are mostly safe, but some can still raise glucose slightly. I am planning to buy a small cup of amul sugar-free for her to try this weekend.
