Can diabetics have maple syrup?

My daughter bought some maple syrup for pancakes. I'm diabetic, so I know I can't have regular syrup, but I was wondering if maple syrup is any different.

To be honest, maple syrup is extremely expensive in India and it is basically pure sugar anyway. Instead of spending so much on fancy syrups and then paying for extra glucose strips to monitor spikes, it is much cheaper and safer to just avoid it completely.

Beta, these foreign syrups are not suitable for our health, especially when you have high sugar. If you need a little sweetness in your tea or food occasionally, a very small piece of organic jaggery is still better, but even that should be taken with great care.

Maple syrup has a high glycemic index and will definitely raise your blood glucose levels. You should definitely check with your diabetologist before adding any such concentrated sweeteners to your diet.

If you want your sugar levels to run a marathon, then sure, go ahead with the maple syrup! Jokes apart, it is just fancy liquid sugar. Better to stick to unsweetened pancakes or use stevia if you really need that sweet kick.

I completely understand how stressful it is to constantly check everything you eat. It feels like we can't enjoy anything sweet anymore. But honestly, avoiding maple syrup is much safer for our peace of mind because it causes really rapid spikes.

Hey, don't worry about missing out on sweet things. While real maple syrup is highly sugary and best avoided, there are some great sugar-free maple-flavored syrups available online. Just check the ingredients list for maltodextrin before buying.
