Can diabetics have dates?

Dates are often given as a healthy snack, especially during Ramadan. I'm diabetic, and I'm not sure if I can eat them because they're quite sweet. Are dates something diabetics can have, and if so, how many?

I have been managing type 2 for a decade now. You can definitely eat dates, but limit it to just one or max two a day, preferably in the morning. Always buy the ones without added sugar syrup, and eat them with some almonds to slow down digestion.

Dates are packed with fiber, but they are still extremely dense in natural sugars. If you are active and working out, having one pre-workout can give you quick energy without issues. Just don't sit on the couch and eat a handful.

Honestly, dates are basically sugar bombs. My dad has diabetes and we strictly limit his intake of dates because they shoot his sugar up almost instantly. Better to stick to walnuts or almonds when you want to munch on something.

I always keep dates at home for quick energy. For diabetics, they are a double-edged sword—good nutrients but high sugar. Just chop one single date and mix it into your oats or dahlia for breakfast instead of using honey or sugar.

I totally get it, controlling sweet cravings is so incredibly hard when you have diabetes. Dates are a great natural alternative to mithai, but they are still sweet. Just have one occasionally so you don't feel deprived, you are doing great.

I tracked my glucose levels after eating two Medjool dates, and there was a pretty sharp spike. If you really want them, try the smaller, less sweet varieties and make sure to log it. Having them with some fat like peanut butter helps flatten the curve.

Yes, you can have them but limit it to one per day and always pair it with a few walnuts to control the sugar release.

Haan, bilkul kha sakte hain par limit mein na! Aisa nahi ki healthy samajh kar poori katori bhar ke kha liya. Din mein ek khajur khana kaafi hai, aur koshish karo ki black wale bina sugar ke dry dates hi lo.

I ate just one date yesterday and felt so guilty and anxious that my sugar would spike. Does anyone else also feel nervous after eating even small natural sweets like this, or is it just me overthinking?

Yes, you can have them but only in very small amounts. Just eat one date when you really crave sweets, and it will keep you happy and healthy.

Let's be direct: dates have a high glycemic index. If your HbA1c is already high, avoid them completely. If it is well under control, one dry date once in a while won't hurt, but don't make it a daily snack.
