Can diabetics fast?

Ramadan is approaching, and as a diabetic, I'm worried about fasting. My family insists I should observe, but my doctor warned me about skipping meals. Is it safe for diabetics to fast during religious periods?

I have had diabetes for 25 years and used to fast regularly during festivals. But as you grow older, your body changes and long fasts can cause severe hypoglycemia. Take it from my experience, your health is the biggest prayer, so don't force yourself to fast.

Managing both thyroid and blood sugar means my metabolism is already a bit unpredictable, so fasting is a big no-no for me. If you are planning to fast, you must get your regular blood tests done and get your doctor's approval to adjust your medicine dosage accordingly.

Fasting can be very risky because your sugar levels can suddenly drop or shoot up. If you do fast, make sure to drink lemon water with a pinch of salt to stay hydrated. But if you start feeling dizzy or sweaty, stop the fast immediately and consult your doctor.

I totally get you, even I had to rethink my Karwa Chauth and Ekadashi fasts after my diagnosis. What I do now is 'phalahar' fasting where I eat small portions of nuts and curd throughout the day. It is practical and keeps my glucose levels completely stable.

Fasting with diabetes is like playing with fire while wearing petrol clothes! Our bodies need regular fuel to keep the medicines in balance. Honestly, I told my family my fasting days are officially retired, and my doctor fully agreed with my decision!

I completely understand the anxiety and guilt of wanting to fast for family traditions but worrying about your health. It is a really stressful situation to navigate. Please remember that keeping yourself safe is the most important thing, so don't feel guilty if you can't fast.
