Can diabetics eat white rice?

Rice is a staple in our household, and we mostly eat white rice. After my diabetes diagnosis, I'm trying to figure out if I need to completely stop eating it. Can diabetics eat white rice, or should I switch entirely to brown rice or other grains?

I totally get it, giving up white rice is the hardest part of an Indian diet. It feels like a staple comfort food we just can't do without. If you eat it, try reducing the portion to half a cup and load up the plate with dal and subji.

No need to buy expensive quinoa or exotic rice. Just drain the starch water (pej) while cooking normal white rice. Eat limited quantity with lots of green veggies and a bowl of curd, it fits perfectly in a normal budget and lifestyle.

You can eat white rice, but you have to earn those carbs. I usually have a small portion right after my workout when insulin sensitivity is high. Also, adding a 15-minute brisk walk right after your meal makes a massive difference in preventing that sugar spike.

I used to eat plates of white rice thinking 'nothing will happen' until my vision started getting blurry and my sugar touched 350. Don't make the same mistake I did. Get your HbA1c checked regularly and strictly control your rice portions.

It is better to switch to unpolished or red rice if possible, and always add a pinch of cinnamon or methi powder to your meals. But if your fasting sugar levels are constantly running very high, please don't rely only on these tips and consult your doctor immediately.

I literally cried the first week after my diagnosis because my family eats rice twice a day and I felt so isolated. It takes time to adjust emotionally. Now I eat a very small bowl of basmati rice with lots of fish curry and fiber, and my readings are stable.
