Can diabetics eat rice?

In our South Indian diet, rice is a very important part of every meal. I have had diabetes for many years now, and I'm always confused about how much rice I can safely eat. Is white rice completely off-limits, or can I have it in small portions?

You don't need to quit rice completely, just swap white rice for brown or parboiled rice. Keep the portion small, like one small cup, and pair it with lots of veggies and chicken or paneer. A quick walk after eating also helps a lot.

In our family, we have eaten rice for generations. What worked for me was reducing the quantity and practicing deep breathing before meals. Eating slowly and mindfully helps the body process the carbs much better.

My son loves rice, so I cook it by draining the excess starch water first. I also mix a lot of carrots, peas, and beans into it so he gets fiber. It is all about how you prepare it and controlling the portion size.

I feel so guilty whenever I eat even a spoonful of rice, like I am ruining my health. Does anyone else get this food anxiety? I try to eat daliya instead, but sometimes the craving for hot rice is just too much.

I absolutely panicked when I was first diagnosed and stopped eating rice completely, which made me miserable. Later, my dietician told me that a small portion of basmati rice with dal and sabzi is perfectly fine. Don't worry, you don't have to give it up.

White rice has a high glycemic index, so it definitely spikes my sugar if I eat too much. I have switched to black rice or small portions of hand-pounded rice. I always check my blood sugar two hours after eating to keep track.

Honestly, biryani is life, and living without rice is just sad. I still eat it but strictly restrict myself to weekends. I make sure to eat a huge bowl of green salad beforehand so I don't overeat the rice.
