Can diabetics eat pickles?

I can't imagine eating my dal chawal without a little bit of achaar. My doctor recently told me I have high blood pressure along with diabetes. Is it still okay for me to eat pickles, or should I avoid them because of the salt?

Yes, but only in very small quantities. Pickles have a lot of salt and oil which can affect your blood pressure.

I love eating a little aam ka aachar with my meals, but I always get so anxious about the sodium and preservative content. Does anyone else get worried about their blood pressure levels after eating pickles, or am I just overthinking?

My grandmother has diabetes and she cannot eat her meals without a tiny bit of pickle. We just make homemade pickles for her with very little salt and no sugar at all. It keeps her happy and doesn't affect her health badly.

Be very careful with commercial pickles. Many brands add sugar or jaggery to balance the sourness, which is terrible for diabetics. Always check the ingredients list for added sweeteners, and stick to simple oil-and-salt-based homemade ones in small amounts.

Hi, pickles won't directly spike your blood sugar unless they contain added sugar. However, the high sodium content is a risk for diabetic patients as it can raise blood pressure. Limit your intake to half a teaspoon per meal.
