Can diabetics eat melon?
It's summer, and we have a lot of melons at home. My elderly mother has diabetes, and she enjoys eating fruit. I'm unsure if melons are high in sugar or if she can safely have them.

Melons have a high glycemic index but low glycemic load. If your doctor allows, you can have a small cup, but make sure to go for a quick 20-minute walk afterwards to keep your blood sugar in check.
Local watermelons or muskmelons are very cheap and healthy in season. Just make sure to eat them in small quantities so you don't spike your sugar and end up spending more money on doctor visits and blood test strips.
Don't stress, you can definitely eat melons like cantaloupe or watermelon. Just control the portion to one small bowl and eat the fruit fresh, never drink it as a juice. You will be perfectly fine, trust me.
I used to cry during summers seeing everyone eat huge plates of cold watermelon while I couldn't. It is emotionally so hard. But having a small portion of muskmelon occasionally is actually quite safe and helps you feel normal.
My son has juvenile diabetes and he loves watermelon in summers. I give him a very small cup of freshly cut melon right after his lunch, as the fiber and protein from the main meal help slow down the sugar absorption.
