Can diabetics eat lentils?

Dal is a staple in our home, and we eat it almost every day. My husband has diabetes, and I want to make sure I'm cooking meals that are healthy for him. Are lentils (dal) a good and safe food for diabetics, or should we be careful?

Lentils are excellent for managing diabetes because they are packed with complex carbs and fiber which release glucose very slowly. However, please be mindful of how they are cooked; avoid heavy oil tadkas and always keep an eye on portion sizes as they still contain carbohydrates.

I have had diabetes for over twenty years now, and simple dals have been my main strength. Moong dal and masoor dal are very gentle on the stomach and do not cause any sudden sugar spikes. Eat them daily with a small portion of brown rice or missi roti, and you will stay strong.

Lentils are highly practical because they are easy to cook and provide stable, long-lasting energy for a long workday. Prepare a big batch of mixed dal or sprouts over the weekend. It saves cooking time during busy mornings and keeps your blood sugar perfectly steady.

I can only speak from my personal journey with diabetes. I eat a bowl of boiled chana or red lentils almost every afternoon, and my post-meal blood sugar has consistently remained under 140. It has worked wonderfully for me as a steady source of energy.

My mom has diabetes and she practically lives on lentils! They are so versatile and delicious, whether you make a comforting dal soup or a quick moong dal chilla. It's a super healthy way to get protein without worrying about those scary sugar spikes.

In my family, we have tried many diet changes, and we found that replacing heavy wheat rotis with a thick bowl of lentils like yellow moong dal is highly effective. It keeps the stomach full and keeps sugar in check. It's a very practical, time-tested way to manage diabetes.

I want to start eating more whole lentils like black urad dal, but I get so anxious that it might cause a sudden spike in my levels. Does anyone else feel worried about the carb content in lentils, or do they generally stay stable for you?
