Can diabetics eat green peas?

We use green peas quite often in our curries and pulao at home. My mother has diabetes, and I'm always checking if common ingredients are suitable for her. Can diabetics eat green peas regularly, or should we moderate the amount?

I totally get it, when you have diabetes, you feel so restricted and even a simple vegetable like green peas makes you doubt yourself. Peas do have some natural starch, but they are also packed with fiber and protein. You don't have to avoid them completely, just keep the portion size moderate.

My diabetologist explained that green peas are starchy vegetables, unlike leafy greens, so we need to count their carbs. However, because they are high in fiber, they digest slowly. The doctor advised me to limit them to half a cup per meal and pair them with a protein like paneer.

Don't trust those random diet blogs that say peas are a miracle food or that they are bad for diabetes. Peas have a medium glycemic index, so they can affect people differently. It is always best to verify with your doctor or dietitian about what works for your specific sugar levels.

Peas are a solid carb source with good fiber, making them decent for post-workout meals. If your doctor allows you to do moderate workouts, a 20-minute brisk walk after a meal containing peas will easily help manage any minor sugar fluctuations.

In a vegetarian diet, green peas are a very good source of plant protein and essential nutrients. But since they contain more carbohydrates than other green veggies, you should adjust your rice or roti portion accordingly when eating a peas dish like matar paneer.

I just managed to bring my fasting sugar down to normal levels recently! I used to be scared of green peas, but I started adding them to my vegetable oats in small amounts. My readings stayed totally fine, so from my experience, they are safe if you control the portion.
