Can diabetics drink tequila?

My friends are planning a party and there'll be a lot of alcohol. I have diabetes, and I'm trying to be responsible. Is it okay for me to have tequila, maybe in moderation?

As someone managing diabetes, I am extremely cautious with alcohol. Tequila itself has zero carbs, but alcohol can cause your liver to stop releasing glucose, leading to dangerous low blood sugar levels. If you choose to drink, always do it with food and check your levels frequently.

I panicked when my diabetic husband had a drink at a wedding, thinking his sugar would spike. But his doctor explained that occasional moderate drinking is okay as long as you avoid sweet mixers like juice or regular soda. Just stick to water or club soda as a mixer and relax.

My doctor told me that pure spirits like tequila don't raise blood sugar because they don't contain carbohydrates. However, they can cause delayed hypoglycemia, especially if you are taking diabetes medication. He advised having no more than one drink and always eating a carb-containing meal beforehand.

In our family, elders always say to avoid alcohol completely if you have sugar problems. But my doctor said a single shot of tequila occasionally is fine, provided your liver functions are healthy. Always trust your doctor's assessment of your health over general advice.

It can be really tough navigating social situations when you have to monitor your sugar. If you are having tequila, please avoid those sweet margarita mixers as they are full of sugar syrup. Just have it on the rocks with lime, and make sure to eat something healthy along with it.

If you decide to drink tequila, make sure you budget for extra glucose test strips because you will need to check your sugar before bed and the next morning. Alcohol-induced low sugar is dangerous, and regular monitoring is the only way to stay safe without spending on emergency hospital visits.
