Can diabetics be organ donors?

I've always wanted to be an organ donor, and I've registered for it. But I developed diabetes a few years ago. Now I'm wondering, can diabetics be organ donors, or does my condition prevent me from donating organs to others?

Yes, diabetics can donate certain organs like kidneys or eyes after death, but it depends heavily on how long they had diabetes and if there is any organ damage. The transplant doctors make the final call based on tests.

When we were discussing organ donation at the hospital, the coordinator explained that having diabetes doesn't automatically rule you out. However, you must ask your doctor clearly or contact an official donor registry to understand the specific health criteria.

I understand how worrying it can be to think about your health and future eligibility for such noble causes. It is actually possible to donate some tissues or organs, but it's best to consult a medical professional to clear your doubts.

It's amazing that you're thinking about this! Even if our diets are limited due to sugar control, some of our organs can still save lives. Just keep yourself healthy, and ask a doctor about the eligibility rules.

I was reading up on NOTTO guidelines and it says having diabetes is not a blanket ban for organ donation. They evaluate each organ's health individually at the time of donation. Still, consulting a doctor is the best way to know.

I also want to register for organ donation but I am scared they will reject me because of my high HbA1c. Has anyone with type 2 diabetes successfully registered as a donor in India? Please share your experience.

Diabetic patients can often donate corneas and other tissues, but active organs like kidneys might be affected by long-term high blood sugar. Keeping a healthy lifestyle helps, but do get a doctor's opinion on your eligibility.

Medical suitability for organ donation is determined on a case-by-case basis. While diabetes can affect vascular health, many diabetics can still donate eyes, skin, or other organs. You should discuss this with your specialist for accurate guidance.
