Can dengue fever kill you?
My friend recently got dengue, and he's quite sick. I've heard scary stories about it during the monsoon season. How serious is dengue fever, like, can it actually be fatal if not treated properly?

I was actually reading up on this recently out of curiosity. It turns out that while most dengue cases are mild, it can get really dangerous if it turns into severe dengue, like hemorrhagic fever. It is rare but definitely possible if not treated in time.
Honestly, I had dengue back in college and my platelets dropped like crazy. It can get serious if you ignore the signs and don't get hospitalized when needed. If your fever isn't dropping or you feel super weak, just get a blood test done immediately.
Let's not panic first. Yes, dengue has complications that can be life-threatening, but only in severe untreated cases. If you keep a close eye on platelet counts, stay extremely hydrated, and consult a doctor early on, it is very manageable.
When my son got dengue, I was absolutely terrified of this. But our pediatrician reassured us that keeping up with regular blood tests to monitor platelets is the key. Just ensure they are drinking lots of fluids and get medical help immediately if you see any bleeding or extreme lethargy.
I had severe dengue with internal bleeding a few years ago, and trust me, it is nothing to take lightly. It can absolutely turn critical very fast. Please do not self-medicate or wait it out at home; if you have high fever with severe abdominal pain or vomiting, go to a hospital immediately.
It can become fatal if there is severe internal bleeding or fluid loss, which is why absolute rest is crucial. Don't try to be a hero and do any physical workouts or heavy walking when you have dengue. Just rest, let your body heal, and only resume light movements once your doctor gives a green light.
