Can dehydration cause kidney stones?

My father suffered a lot with kidney stones, and he always told me to drink plenty of water to avoid them. I sometimes slack off, especially in winter. Is it true that not drinking enough water is a major cause of kidney stones?

Dehydration is a major risk factor for kidney stones. With our busy work schedules, we often forget to drink water. Keep a bottle right on your desk as a visual cue, and make sure you empty it a few times during your shift.

Yes, it is actually one of the most common causes. When you don't drink enough water, minerals in your urine become highly concentrated and crystallize into stones. Try to drink at least 10 glasses of water a day, it really helps keep them away.

Absolutely, less water means minerals build up easily into stones. Along with good hydration, light walking can actually help flush out tiny crystals before they become big stones, but do check with your doctor first if you have active pain.

I love my spicy food and salty snacks, but they definitely increase the risk of stones if you don't drink enough water. Balance out your cravings by keeping yourself super hydrated throughout the day so those minerals don't get a chance to clump up!

Please don't ignore this. I used to drink very little water and ignored minor back aches until a massive kidney stone blocked my urinary tract. It was excruciating. If you suspect you have stones, get an ultrasound and see a doctor immediately.
