Can dandruff cause scabs?

My dandruff has gotten really bad, and now I'm finding small scabs on my scalp, especially when I scratch. I'm worried it's more than just simple dandruff. Can dandruff actually get so severe that it causes scabs?

Yes, if you keep scratching the dry flakes, you will end up with bloody scabs. Stop picking at your scalp and use a strong ketoconazole shampoo instead of oiling it more.

When dandruff is very thick, it forms a crust, and scratching it leaves painful scabs. Wash your hair regularly with warm water and use a soft comb to gently remove loose flakes, don't use nails.

Please get it checked by a skin specialist. I ignored my itchy scalp and scabs thinking it was normal dandruff, but it turned out to be scalp psoriasis and took months of heavy treatment to clear up.

I had these thick scabs last winter because of heavy dandruff. The trick is to never peel them off while dry. Let the medicated shampoo soften them during your shower, they will wash away safely on their own.

Scabs can happen if the dandruff is severe, but make sure they aren't oozing or getting infected. I get so paranoid when I feel bumps on my head. Keep the scalp dry and see a doc if it hurts.
