Can creatine cause nausea and vomiting?

My husband has just started taking creatine powder for his workouts. Since then, he's been complaining of feeling quite nauseous and has even vomited once or twice. Can creatine be the reason behind these symptoms?

If you feel a bit of nausea, try taking your creatine after a solid meal or with ginger tea to soothe your stomach. However, if you are actively vomiting and cannot keep fluids down, please stop the supplement and consult a doctor immediately to prevent dehydration.

Actually yes, I had terrible nausea last week when I tried loading 20g of creatine on an empty stomach. I stopped doing that, started taking just 3g after lunch with lots of water, and the sickness went away completely.

Nausea usually happens if you're doing a loading phase and dumping 20 grams of powder into your gut at once. Skip the loading phase entirely and just take 3-5g daily after your meals. You won't face any issues.

These modern powders can sometimes be heavy for the stomach to digest. If you feel uneasy, take a break from it and drink warm mint water or some buttermilk to cool your digestive system naturally.

I can't speak on the medical side, but personally, I felt very nauseous when I took creatine with cold water on an empty stomach. Now I always mix it in lukewarm water after my breakfast, and I haven't had any issue since.

My stomach complains even if I look at extra spicy pickle, so creatine definitely gave me some mild nausea initially. Just don't gulp it down like a shot on an empty stomach; treat your digestion with some respect and take it with food!
