Can cod liver oil cause diarrhea?

I started taking cod liver oil for its health benefits, but within a few days, I got diarrhea. Is it common for cod liver oil to cause this kind of stomach upset?

I was just reading about this because I wanted to start taking these capsules. Apparently, if you take too much cod liver oil on an empty stomach, the high fat content can definitely trigger loose motions. It seems starting with a very low dose is the trick.

Yes, it actually can! When I first started taking cod liver oil, I had a really upset stomach for three days. I realized I was taking it without food. Once I started taking it right after lunch, the diarrhea completely stopped.

I completely understand how embarrassing and exhausting this can be. I felt so miserable when cod liver oil messed up my digestion and made me run to the washroom constantly. Please don't force yourself to take it if it is making you suffer like this; your comfort matters first.

Please be careful because severe diarrhea can lead to heavy dehydration very quickly. I ignored stomach issues from supplements once and ended up on an IV drip. If the loose motions don't stop in a day, stop the capsules and see a doctor immediately.

In my long life, I have seen many people react to heavy oils this way. Yes, cod liver oil can loosen the bowels if your digestive fire is weak. Don't worry, just stop the oil for a few days, eat simple khichdi, and you will be perfectly fine.

Oh, absolutely. I took one capsule late night on an empty stomach and spent half the night running to the loo instead of sleeping. Trust me, never take fish oil on an empty stomach unless you want a midnight adventure.
