Can children have sleep apnea?

My son often snores very loudly and seems restless at night. The doctor suggested he might have sleep apnea. I always thought that was an adult condition, so can children actually have sleep apnea?

Honestly, I thought only tired old uncles snored like engines, but my 6-year-old nephew was doing the same! Turned out he had enlarged tonsils causing sleep apnea. Now he sleeps like a baby while I am still here staring at the ceiling at 3 AM.

Yes beta, children can definitely have it, especially if they breathe through the mouth or snore loudly at night. Sometimes simple things like steam inhalation before sleep or keeping the room free of dust help with congestion. But if they gasp for breath, please don't rely only on home remedies and consult a good pediatrician.

Oh God, this is actually what I am worrying about lately with my daughter. She makes these sudden gasping sounds while sleeping and it keeps me awake all night with panic. Has anyone else gone through this? Did your doctor suggest a sleep study or just simple medicines?

My son also had this issue when he was small. Since I manage my own health and diet carefully, I noticed his sleep got much better once we monitored his weight and cut down on late-night sugary treats which were causing congestion. Definitely consult a doctor to see what is causing the blockage.

In our days, we did not even know the term sleep apnea, we just thought the child is deep sleeper. My youngest son used to snore heavily, and we later found out it affected his focus at school. Once the doctor treated his nasal allergy, his sleep and energy improved completely, so getting it checked early is always best.

Hey, don't stress too much about this. Yes, kids can have it but it is actually pretty common and totally treatable, often just due to swollen tonsils or adenoids. Just get a quick checkup done with an ENT specialist so you can sleep peacefully.
