Can celiac disease cause weight gain?

I was diagnosed with celiac disease last year, and honestly, I've gained quite a bit of weight since then, even though I'm trying to eat healthier. I always thought it caused weight loss. Is it possible for celiac disease to actually lead to weight gain?

Yes, it actually can, especially after you start a gluten-free diet and your gut starts healing and absorbing food properly. My tip is to avoid packaged gluten-free junk foods because they are loaded with extra fat and sugar to make them taste good. Stick to simple home-cooked meals.

My gastroenterologist explained that weight gain can happen in two ways. Before diagnosis, chronic inflammation can mess with your metabolism, and after diagnosis, your healed villi absorb calories much more efficiently. It is a very documented phenomenon, so you are not alone in this.

I totally get it, it feels so frustrating when you think celiac only causes weight loss but you end up putting on weight instead. It makes you question your own body. Please go easy on yourself, your body is just trying to heal and find its balance right now.

Absolutely, celiac weight gain is real. People think gluten-free automatically means weight loss, but packaged GF bread and flour are actually super calorie-dense. Cut down on the processed GF stuff from the supermarket and you'll see your weight stabilize.

And here I thought going gluten-free would make me look like a model! Turns out my newly healed intestines are now absorbing every single calorie from my gluten-free cookies with maximum dedication. Don't worry, it's just your gut working too well for once!

Managing weight is already so tricky when you have gut or hormonal issues like PCOS, and celiac can definitely add to that confusion. I've noticed that sudden dietary changes can really disrupt our internal balance. It's best to work with a dietitian to figure out a gentle, balanced plan.

I have actually been gaining weight recently even after strictly avoiding gluten, and it's making me really anxious. I thought I'd lose weight instead. Did anyone else experience this sudden weight gain when they first started healing? Is this normal?
