Can cavities not hurt?

My dentist just told me I have a cavity, but I haven't felt any pain or discomfort at all. I thought cavities always hurt. Can cavities exist without causing any pain?

Yes, absolutely. In fact, most early-stage cavities don't hurt at all because the decay is only on the outer enamel, which has no nerves. Pain only starts once the decay reaches deep inside. Don't wait for pain to start before visiting a dentist.

Yes, it is very common! I had two cavities during my last routine checkup and I was shocked because I felt absolutely no pain or sensitivity. My dentist explained that they were caught early, which made getting them filled so easy and painless. Regular checkups really help.

Don't worry, it's completely normal for a cavity not to hurt in the beginning. But just because there is no pain doesn't mean we should ignore it. It's much safer to get it filled now while it's small, rather than waiting for a painful toothache to develop later.

Yes, cavities can remain totally silent and painless for a very long time. For your safety, you should never rely on pain as an indicator of dental health. It is highly recommended to get regular checkups so a professional can spot and treat any decay early.

Totally. I had a big black spot on my molar for a year that never hurt once, so I thought it was fine. Then suddenly one day it started aching like crazy. Trust me, get it checked now while it still doesn't hurt, it will save you a lot of trouble.
