Can beetroot cause kidney stones?

Trying to eat healthier and have started including beetroot in my diet more often. But I'm a bit concerned because I heard that beetroot might contribute to kidney stone formation. Can eating beetroot actually cause kidney stones?

Yes, beetroot is very rich in oxalates which can bind with calcium and form stones in the kidneys. If you love beets, a practical tip is to eat them alongside calcium-rich foods like curd, which binds the oxalates in your gut before they reach your kidneys. And keep drinking water!

I was reading some nutrition blogs recently and was quite surprised to find that beetroot is in the top tier of high-oxalate foods. Since most kidney stones are calcium oxalate, eating too much beetroot can definitely increase the risk if you are prone to them.

If you want to eat beetroot but are scared of stones, the simple solution is moderation. Don't drink concentrated raw beet juice every day; instead, eat boiled or cooked beetroot in salad once or twice a week and make sure you drink 3 liters of water daily.

Please don't ignore dull back aches like I did when I was drinking beet juice daily. I thought it was just muscular pain, but it turned out to be a large kidney stone that required a painful procedure. Get a routine ultrasound if you have persistent discomfort.

My urologist explained that beetroot contains high amounts of organic oxalates. When these combine with calcium in the urinary tract, they crystallize into calcium oxalate stones. If you have a prior history of renal calculi, it is highly recommended to limit beetroot consumption.

Nature provides wonderful foods like beetroot for our health, but balance is key in everything. Overconsumption of even good things can strain our physical body and cause issues like stones. Eat mindfully, keep your body hydrated, and stay blessed.

My mother always says to drink plenty of barley water to clear the kidneys, but when I had a kidney stone issue, my doctor specifically told me to cut down on beetroot and spinach due to high oxalates. It is always wise to follow the doctor's dietary advice.
