Can basal cell skin cancer turn into melanoma?

Recently had a spot removed that my doctor said was basal cell skin cancer. Someone told me these types of cancers can become melanoma, which sounds very serious. Can basal cell skin cancer really transform into melanoma?

Oh god, I have been stressing about this exact same thing for weeks now! Every little mole on my hand makes me super nervous. Did anyone else get a biopsy done just to be absolutely sure they didn't have both?

At my age, body parts start acting up every day, but thank god this is one less thing to worry about. Basal cell and melanoma are totally different players in the game, they don't swap places. Just show it to a doctor and get it sorted before your hair turns any greyer.

I was actually just reading up on this because my colleague got diagnosed with a skin lesion. From what I gathered, they originate from entirely different types of cells in the skin. So no, one doesn't mutate into the other, which is a bit of a relief.

Even though medical science says they don't turn into each other, you can never be too safe with skin lesions. Please don't rely on online forums for peace of mind. A dermatologist should look at it under a dermatoscope to give you a proper diagnosis.

No, they don't. Basal cell carcinoma starts in the basal cells, while melanoma starts in the melanocytes. They are distinct. Just get a biopsy if you are suspicious of any spot on your body, it's very straightforward.

Man, I've been awake since 3 AM looking at skin spots and now my eyes are burning. Rest easy, they are two different things, one doesn't turn into the other. Now I can finally close these 50 open tabs and try to get some sleep.
