Can bad smell cause vomiting?

Sometimes, when encountering a really strong and awful smell, I immediately feel nauseous and even gag. Is it possible for a very bad odour to actually trigger vomiting?

Yes, absolutely. Strong or foul odors stimulate the olfactory nerve, which directly triggers the vomiting center in your brain. It's a completely natural reflex. Try to sit in a well-ventilated room, sniff some fresh lemon, and sip on some cool water until the feeling passes.

Bro, yes. I can't even stand the smell of certain raw meats or spoiled food in the kitchen without immediately gagging. My stomach turns instantly and I have actually thrown up because of bad smells a couple of times. It is pretty normal, just get away from the smell quickly.

Yes, beta, some people have very sensitive noses, and a bad smell can easily trigger a gag reflex and lead to vomiting. I always keep a small bottle of peppermint oil or a clean handkerchief with some lavender spray in my purse. Whenever I encounter a bad smell outside, I just cover my nose with it.

While a bad smell can temporarily make you vomit, please monitor yourself closely. If the vomiting continues even after you are away from the smell, or if you can't keep any liquids down, you should definitely consult a doctor. Continuous vomiting can lead to severe dehydration very quickly.

I was actually researching this today because my roommate threw up from a smelly dustbin. Apparently, our bodies developed this reflex over evolutionary history to protect us from eating spoiled or toxic things. It is amazing how our senses work together, though it is a very unpleasant experience!
