Can asthma be mistaken for copd?

My elder sister has been having breathing issues, and the doctor is doing some tests. She mentioned that sometimes asthma can be mistaken for COPD because the symptoms are similar. How common is this, can asthma be mistaken for COPD?

Yes, it can. My uncle was being treated for asthma for years, but his breathing didn't improve. Finally, we went to a chest specialist who did a spirometry test and diagnosed it as COPD. Getting the right diagnosis changed his whole treatment, so please get a proper evaluation.

I was actually reading up on this because the symptoms of wheezing and coughing seem so similar. Apparently, they both cause breathing issues, but COPD is usually progressive and seen more in older adults or heavy smokers. It is definitely easy to confuse the two without proper tests.

I don't know much about this, but is COPD more serious than asthma? My grandfather has been coughing a lot lately and we are worried it might be something other than his usual asthma. How do doctors find out the difference?

Both cause shortness of breath, so people often get confused. A simple and practical way to find out is a lung function test called spirometry at any decent lab. It doesn't cost much and will clearly tell you whether it is asthma or COPD.

Mistaking one for the other is quite risky because the long-term management and medicines for COPD and asthma have key differences. Please do not self-diagnose based on symptoms. Go to a pulmonologist and get a proper diagnosis for your safety.

It is actually super common to confuse them because both make you wheeze. But asthma is usually reversible with an inhaler, while COPD is more constant. Definitely talk to a doc and get a clear picture so you are taking the right steps.

Since I have thyroid issues, I know how important regular blood tests and doctor follow-ups are for a correct diagnosis. Similarly, for lungs, you can't just guess between asthma and COPD. You need proper pulmonary tests regularly to see how your lungs are responding to medicine.
