Can antacids cause kidney stones?

For my chronic heartburn, I've been taking antacids quite regularly for many years now. My neighbour just got kidney stones and asked if I was concerned about my antacid use. Can taking antacids for a long time lead to kidney stone formation?

If you are popping calcium-based antacids like mints every day, it can definitely increase the risk of stones. The simple solution is to stop self-medicating, drink at least 3 liters of water daily, and get a simple ultrasound done if you feel any side pain.

My father used to take antacid tablets daily for his gas problem, but our family doctor warned us that overusing calcium carbonate ones can lead to kidney stones. He advised us to use barley water for cooling the body and strictly follow the prescribed dosage instead of buying them over the counter.

Yes, they absolutely can if you overuse the calcium-based ones. Stop abusing OTC antacids for daily acidity; go fix your diet and see a gastroenterologist to get a proper treatment plan.

At 55, trying to cure daily acidity with antacids while risking kidney stones feels like trading a small headache for a massive migraine! Honestly, we need to stop treating these chewable tablets like candy. Speak to a doctor before you end up passing a stone.

Beta, taking antacids once in a while for spicy food is fine, but daily use is not good for your kidneys at all. Many of these contain high calcium which can deposit as stones over time. Please drink lots of water and ask your doctor for a safer way to manage your acidity.

Haan na, people don't realize that daily antacids can harm the kidneys. My uncle had the same habit and later got diagnosed with a small stone. Better to consult your doc and find out the actual reason for so much gas and acidity, na.
