Can an old mattress cause back pain?

Chronic back pain has been plaguing me for quite some time now, really affecting my sleep. My mattress is quite old, maybe 10-12 years. Could an old, worn-out mattress actually be the reason for my persistent back pain?

I have PCOS and often suffer from joint and muscle aches, so a bad mattress makes it ten times worse for me. An old, unsupportive bed definitely ruins your posture. Just be careful to choose a medium-firm one, as too soft or too hard can both cause issues.

I was suffering from terrible lower back pain every morning for three months and thought it was a spine issue. Finally, I replaced my saggy seven-year-old coir mattress with a firm orthopedic one, and the pain literally vanished in a week. Trust me, if your mattress is sagging, change it immediately.

A sagging mattress is the number one enemy of your spine. I dealt with this for a year before realizing my bed had lost all its support. My advice is to look for a pocket spring or memory foam mattress with good lumbar support, and always use a thin pillow to keep your neck aligned.

I can't say if it is the only reason for your pain, but in my case, sleeping on an old guest room mattress gave me a stiff neck and back ache for days. Once I shifted back to my regular bed, I felt much better. It might be worth checking how old your bed is.

Of course it will! If your mattress has a deep hollow in the middle like a pit, your back is going to bend all night. Don't waste money on pain relief sprays and balms; just go buy a decent firm mattress first.
