Can acid reflux cause ear pain?

I've had persistent ear pain for a few weeks, and it's not going away with normal remedies. I also suffer from acid reflux, and someone told me it can sometimes affect the ears. Can acid reflux cause ear pain?

Yes, it actually can! I was so confused when my ears started aching along with my throat burning, but my doctor told me the acid can travel up and irritate the Eustachian tube. Sleeping with an extra pillow to elevate my head really helped me reduce both the reflux and the ear ache.

Great, as if acid reflux keeping me awake till 3 AM wasn't enough, now my ears have joined the party too. Yes, apparently the acid can irritate the nerves connecting the throat and ears. I am surviving on antacids and black screen sleep music right now, honestly.

I totally get it, ear pain is so uncomfortable and it's the last thing you'd expect from stomach acid. The throat and ears share the same nerves, so acid irritation in the esophagus can feel like a sharp ear ache. Please take care and try to avoid sleeping immediately after dinner.

Don't start putting random ear drops or home remedies based on internet advice; ear pain can be due to a real infection. While reflux can cause referred ear pain, you must get an ENT specialist to look inside your ear with an otoscope to know for sure what is happening.

Managing my thyroid means I have to deal with slow digestion and frequent acid reflux, which sometimes triggers a weird ear discomfort. I highly recommend getting regular health checkups and discussing this with your doctor during your routine visits, as they can guide you best.

Man, my love for spicy green chutney and late-night rolls gave me such bad acidity that my left ear started aching. I thought I had an infection, but it was just the acid acting up! Now I try to cut down the spice a bit, especially at night, to keep my ears happy.

This is a surprisingly common question here. Yes, acid reflux can cause what is called referred otalgia because of nerve connections, or even by physically irritating the back of the nasal passage. Keeping your dinner light and visiting an ENT doctor if it persists is the best way to handle this.
