Can acid reflux cause asthma attack?

My husband has really bad acid reflux, and sometimes he struggles to breathe, almost like an asthma attack. He doesn't have diagnosed asthma. Can acid reflux trigger an actual asthma attack, or is it just severe breathlessness?

Yes, clinical studies show that acid reflux (GERD) can indeed trigger or worsen asthma attacks. When stomach acid enters the esophagus, it can trigger a nerve reflex that causes the airways to narrow. However, you should definitely consult a pulmonologist to manage this properly.

At this rate, my stomach is going to start controlling my lungs too! Yes, doctors say acid reflux can weirdly trigger an asthma attack because the body gets confused by the acid irritation. Just keep your antacids close and your heavy dinners far away.

Oh, totally! I have had severe acid reflux trigger a massive coughing spell that felt exactly like a mild asthma attack. Eating very small dinners and not lying down for at least 3 hours after eating has really helped keep my airways clear.

In my years, I have seen many family members struggle with both issues. Reflux can definitely irritate the windpipe and cause a sudden breathing flare-up. Don't worry too much, just make sure to treat the digestion problem alongside the breathing issue.

I was just reading some medical articles about this and was amazed to find that up to 80% of people with asthma also suffer from GERD. The acid can irritate the vocal cords and lead to a sudden shortness of breath. It's a very real connection!

Yes, excess bile and acid in the body can disturb the chest area and cause breathlessness. While having warm water with fennel can help soothe the acid, please do not ignore any actual breathing trouble. Keep your doctor's emergency number close.

I used to panic when I got a sudden coughing fit and breathlessness after eating spicy food, thinking my lungs were failing. My doctor explained it was just acid reflux triggering my asthma. Once we treated the reflux, my breathing attacks reduced drastically.

Yes, reflux can trigger asthma, but before you run and spend thousands on expensive allergy tests, try managing your acidity first. Simple changes like stopping tea and oily food can save you a lot of hospital bills. But do keep an inhaler handy just in case.
