Can a torn meniscus cause pain down the leg?

Since I tore my meniscus a few months back, my knee pain has been manageable with therapy. But recently, I'm feeling a sharp pain radiating all the way down my leg, almost to my ankle. Could this be related to the meniscus injury?

Actually, yes yaar. I had a meniscus tear from football, and the pain was radiating all the way down my calf. It happens because your leg muscles get super tight trying to protect the knee, so everything hurts.

A meniscus tear primarily causes localized knee pain, but muscle compensation can certainly cause discomfort down the shin or calf. However, radiating pain down the leg can also indicate a nerve compression in the spine. Consulting an orthopedic specialist for an MRI is the best course of action.

My orthopedic doctor explained that while the meniscus itself doesn't have nerves that send pain down the leg, the swelling can press on nearby structures. Also, limping alters your gait, which causes calf tightness and referred pain down the leg. Rest and icing are crucial.

My son tore his meniscus during athletics and complained of shooting pain down to his ankle. The physiotherapist told us that the leg muscles were working overtime to support his unstable knee. Proper knee braces and physiotherapy helped him a lot.

I am not completely sure, but when my joints hurt due to weight fluctuations, the pain sometimes spreads down my legs too. If you have a torn meniscus, the altered walking style can definitely strain other muscles. It's probably best to ask a doctor to confirm.

Arey, once you cross 40, a tear in the knee makes your whole leg feel like it belongs to someone else! You start walking like a penguin to avoid pain, which naturally strains the calf and ankle. It is very common, so get some rest.
