Can a six month old sleep on their stomach?

My baby is six months old, and lately, she keeps rolling onto her stomach to sleep, even if I put her on her back. I'm a bit concerned because everyone says babies should sleep on their back. Is it safe for a baby this age to sleep on their tummy?

I used to sit awake for hours crying and watching the baby monitor because my daughter kept rolling onto her tummy at six months. It is so emotionally exhausting to constantly worry about SIDS. Just know that your fears are totally valid, but once they can roll both ways comfortably, it gets a bit safer.

My six-month-old treats his crib like a gymnastics arena and constantly flips onto his stomach. I spend half the night flipping him back like a paratha, which means I've slept about three hours in total. Honestly, if they roll there by themselves, pediatricians say it's fine, but my anxiety clearly didn't get the memo.

I was actually reading up on this because my nephew just turned six months and started doing this. From what I've researched, the general consensus is to always put them down on their back initially. If they roll onto their stomach on their own because their neck muscles are strong now, you don't have to keep flipping them.

We literally just went through this phase last month with my baby boy! He suddenly decided stomach sleeping was his absolute favorite. I asked our pediatrician at his six-month vaccination checkup, and she said as long as he rolled there by himself and his arms are free, it's totally okay to leave him.

My kid sister used to do this all the time when she was a baby. My mom used to say that once they are six months and can hold their head up easily, it's not a major issue because they have the strength to turn. Just make sure there are no loose blankets or soft pillows in the crib.

It is such a milestone when they start rolling over! 😊 Yes, once they reach six months and can roll back and forth, they are usually fine sleeping on their tummy. Just keep the cot completely empty and let them find their own comfy sleeping spot! 👍
