Can a pulse oximeter detect heart attack?

My dad recently bought a pulse oximeter to check his oxygen levels, especially after his cough. He also worries a lot about his heart. I was just wondering, if someone is having a heart attack, would this device show anything unusual?

I used to check my oxygen constantly during panic attacks thinking it would show a heart issue. But actually, I read it doesn't detect a heart attack directly. Has anyone else also felt their heart racing and checked their oximeter hoping for answers?

No, it cannot. I had a major cardiac scare last month, and my oximeter was showing a perfectly normal 98% oxygen level while I was actually having severe chest discomfort. Please don't rely on it; if there is chest pain, go straight to the hospital.

Oh, please don't rely on a pulse oximeter for this! I overthink everything and researched this extensively—it only measures oxygen saturation and pulse rate, not heart muscle damage. If you feel any chest pain, tightness, or breathlessness, please consult a doctor immediately.

No, it doesn't work that way. As someone managing diabetes, I keep trackers for everything, but a pulse oximeter only shows oxygen and pulse. If you suspect any heart issues, you need an ECG and a doctor's evaluation, not an oximeter reading.

In my experience, no. When my father had some chest discomfort, his oxygen level on the pulse oximeter was totally fine, but we still rushed him to the clinic and the doctor did an ECG right away. It's always safer to trust clinical tests.
