Can a panic attack cause an asthma attack?

My younger sister sometimes gets very anxious, and then she starts having trouble breathing. Her doctor said she has mild asthma. I'm worried if her panic attacks can make her asthma worse, maybe even cause a full-blown attack?

Bro, yes. I have mild asthma and when I had a major panic attack during exams, my breathing went out of control and triggered a bad wheezing fit. I had to use my inhaler immediately. Keep your pump close if you get anxious.

It is so scary when they both happen together. The hyperventilating from panic makes your airways tighten up, which can absolutely trigger your asthma. It is a terrible loop, but practicing slow belly breathing really helps.

Definitely. I ignored my heavy breathing during a stressful week thinking it was just anxiety, and ended up in the emergency room with a severe asthma attack. Please don't ignore this, get a proper action plan from your doctor.

Yes, they can trigger each other. I had a severe episode last year where the panic-induced asthma attack caused my oxygen levels to drop. It can become dangerous quickly, so please see a pulmonologist to manage both anxiety and asthma.

Honestly, yes. During presentation days, my chest gets so tight from anxiety that I start coughing like crazy. It is like the stress just locks up my lungs. Taking a minute to sit down and sip water helps me calm down.

Don't go by what people say online about breathing exercises curing this. If you have asthma, a panic attack is a physical trigger that needs medical management. Verify with a proper doctor and keep your prescribed rescue inhaler ready.

My doctor at Jupiter Hospital told me that rapid breathing during anxiety can dry out the airways and trigger asthma. You should ask your doctor clearly about how to differentiate between the two and what rescue steps to take.
