Can a newborn sleep on their tummy?

My mother insists that my newborn will sleep better and longer if I put them on their tummy, like she did with me. But I've read a lot online that says otherwise. Can a newborn actually sleep on their tummy safely?

With my two kids, our pediatrician strictly told us to never let them sleep on their stomach because of safety risks. We always placed them flat on their backs, and they slept perfectly fine that way.

Safe sleep trackers and baby apps all say the same thing: newborns must sleep flat on their backs. Tummy sleeping increases the risk of rebreathing exhaled air, which is dangerous. Keep tummy time for when they are awake and active.

Absolutely not, tummy sleeping is a major safety risk for newborns. They should only sleep on their stomach during supervised 'tummy time' when they are awake. For sleeping, always lay them flat on their back on a firm mattress.

Please take care of the little one. Sleeping on the back is the most natural and safe way for a newborn to rest peacefully. Let them grow strong day by day, and keep their sleeping space simple and clean.

No, please do not let your newborn sleep on their tummy. Always place them on their back to keep them safe and comfortable.

I completely understand the anxiety of trying to make sure your baby is sleeping safely; it is so stressful. But please, always keep them on their back for sleep. It is the single most important rule to keep your mind at peace.

According to the latest pediatric guidelines, placing a newborn on their tummy to sleep is a significant risk factor for SIDS. My doctor emphasized that babies should only sleep on their backs until they are at least one year old and can roll over independently.

I am a new mother and my baby only seems to stop crying when lying on my chest. Is it okay if they fall asleep on their tummy like that, or should I move them immediately?
