Can a newborn sleep in a crib?

We are expecting our first baby very soon, and we are setting up the nursery. We bought a beautiful crib, but my mother-in-law thinks the baby needs to sleep with us initially. Can a newborn sleep in a crib from day one?

Yes, they can, but I kept worrying about SIDS and cot bumpers constantly! If you use a crib, make sure the mattress is very firm, the sheet is tight, and there are absolutely no pillows or soft toys. It kept me up all night, but a bare crib is actually the safest.

Absolutely yes! My little one has been sleeping in her crib since week two. Just keep the crib in your room close to your bed so you can keep an eye on them easily. It makes night feeds much more convenient!

Yes, a newborn can sleep in a crib from day one. The key is to keep the crib empty—no blankets, pillows, or stuffed toys, just a fitted sheet. Place the crib next to your bed for easy reach during those frequent night feeds.

At our hospital, the pediatricians specifically told us that a crib is perfectly fine as long as the baby sleeps flat on their back. Before buying any fancy crib, just ask your doctor about the safe sleep guidelines they recommend.

I was looking into this for my sister's baby. Most pediatric associations say a crib is very safe for a newborn, provided the mattress is firm and fits perfectly without gaps. It seems many parents prefer keeping the crib in their own room for the first six months.
