Can a kidney infection cause diarrhea?

My younger sister has been having severe diarrhea for two days, and she also complained of some discomfort in her back. We are a bit worried since she had a urinary infection a few weeks ago. Could a kidney infection be causing her loose motions?

Yes, a kidney infection can cause diarrhea as your body tries to flush out toxins, or even as a reaction to medications. Since I have diabetes, I have to be very careful with my diet during such infections. If you experience this, drink unsweetened fluids to stay hydrated, and definitely consult your doctor immediately.

It can definitely happen, especially if you have a high fever because of the infection. For the loose motions, you can have simple buttermilk with a pinch of cumin powder or light ORS water to keep your strength up. But please go to the government hospital or a clinic nearby to get proper antibiotics for the kidney infection.

When you have a serious infection like this, your digestive tract can get highly irritated, leading to diarrhea. As someone who manages high blood pressure, I know that sudden dehydration from diarrhea can affect your heart rate and BP. Please get your kidney function and urine tested by a doctor as soon as possible.

I completely panicked when this happened to me last year because I thought my kidneys and stomach were both failing! But my doctor reassured me that the body's systemic response to a kidney infection often triggers diarrhea. Once I started the prescribed antibiotics, both issues cleared up in a few days. Just see a doctor and relax.

Hey, don't panic. Yes, it is quite common for a kidney infection to cause diarrhea because the body's immune response can upset your stomach. I need you to focus on drinking lots of water and simple coconut water so you don't get dehydrated. Most importantly, please book a doctor's appointment today so they can treat the infection.
