Can a cold cause vomiting?

My little one has a bad cold, and yesterday she threw up once, which concerned me. I'm wondering if it was just because of the cold or if it's something more serious. Can a common cold actually cause vomiting in kids?

Yes, swallowing too much mucus or coughing heavily can trigger a gag reflex and lead to vomiting. Keep your fluid intake high with electrolytes or coconut water to stay hydrated, and eat very light meals.

My throat is so congested and I have thrown up twice today. Does this happen to others too during a normal cold, or could it be a stomach infection instead? I am getting a bit worried.

Yes, especially if the phlegm is thick, it can upset the stomach. Just drink warm ginger water in small sips and avoid heavy, oily foods. If the vomiting continues more than three times, please consult a local doctor.

Dekho, heavy coughing or mucus dripping down the throat often causes vomiting, it is normal. But if you are unable to keep even water down or have severe stomach pain, stop waiting and go see a doctor.

I literally just recovered from this. The post-nasal drip was making me super nauseous, and coughing triggered vomiting. Steam inhalation helped clear the mucus and stopped the vomiting for me.

It is quite common, usually due to post-nasal drip irritating your stomach or a bad coughing fit. Stick to simple fluids and ORS. If it doesn't settle by tomorrow, just get a quick consultation with a general physician.

Yes, coughing hard or swallowing nasal mucus during a cold can definitely cause nausea and vomiting.
