Are you supposed to sweat out a fever?

Whenever I get a fever, my elders always tell me to put on more clothes and try to 'sweat it out' to bring it down. This makes me feel very uncomfortable and hotter. Does sweating actually help reduce a fever, or is it just an old wives' tale?

Please don't bundle up in thick blankets to force a sweat; that can cause dehydration and dangerously high body temperatures. Just wear light cotton clothes, drink plenty of water, and use a damp cloth on your forehead to cool down.

Trying to force your body to sweat by wrapping yourself in heavy blankets can actually raise your core temperature dangerously. Instead, practice gentle Shavasana and keep the room well-ventilated to let the body cool down naturally.

Sweating it out through exercise or heavy blankets is a bad idea because your body is already dehydrated from the fever. Focus on resting, drinking electrolytes, and let your body recover before you worry about sweating.

Bro, my hostel mates told me to wear three hoodies to sweat out a fever, and I felt like I was literally boiling. Don't do it, just take a regular crocin and chill under a normal fan.

I get so worried when I sweat during a fever because I feel like my body is overheating. Wrapping up in blankets to force a sweat actually sounds quite risky to me, so please stay safe and keep your room comfortable.

I used to think sweating was the only way to cure a fever, but it just made me feel super weak and dizzy. Now I just wear light pajamas and keep sipping on water to stay safe.

I have tried everything from herbal teas to hot compresses, and I can tell you that forcing yourself to sweat doesn't help. It is much better to just take regular paracetamol as prescribed by your doctor and stay hydrated with coconut water.

Agreed, forcing a sweat is not recommended. Keep the room temperature comfortable and focus on staying well hydrated.

My son had a high fever and we tried to bundle him up, which actually caused his temperature to spike to a dangerous level. Please do not try to force sweating, and consult a doctor immediately if the fever stays high.

Forcing a sweat sounds like a terrible workout session when you're already feeling miserable! I'd rather just sip on some warm, comforting tomato soup and stay under a normal sheet while my body does its thing.
