Are we close to a cure for cancer?

My neighbour was recently diagnosed with cancer, and it's making me think about how devastating this disease is. With all the medical advancements, are we getting any closer to finding a permanent cure for cancer?

I was reading about target therapies and got a bit confused. Does this mean some cancers can be fully cured now without chemo? Sorry, I am still trying to understand this.
