Are tamales bad for diabetics?
My family recently brought back some tamales from their trip. I have diabetes, and I'm wondering if eating tamales could be bad for my sugar levels. Are they generally high in anything I should avoid?

I used to ignore my post-meal sugar spikes thinking one heavy meal wouldn't hurt, and that led to serious health issues. Tamales are made of corn dough (masa) which is very high in fast-digesting carbs and lard. Please monitor your sugar levels closely and don't take these heavy foods lightly.
They are mostly corn dough and fat, so they can spike sugar levels, ho na. If you really want to taste it, just have a very small bite of the filling and skip the heavy outer dough. Better safe than sorry, haan.
With my diabetes, even normal roti spikes me sometimes, so tamales are definitely a high-risk zone! They are delicious but packed with carbs and fats. If I eat one of those, I’ll have to walk on the treadmill for three hours straight to balance it!
I once ate high-carb festive foods blindly and ended up in the hospital with extremely high sugar levels. Tamales have a lot of starch, which is risky. Please consult your doctor or specialist before trying such heavy international dishes.
I was researching Mexican food recently and found out tamales are steamed in corn husks but made of corn flour. Since corn flour has a high glycemic index, it can raise sugar levels quickly. Probably best to eat them very rarely if you have diabetes.
Tamales traditionally use lard and corn masa, making them high in both saturated fats and simple carbohydrates. For a diabetic, this combination can delay digestion but cause prolonged sugar spikes. I would advise looking for healthier, low-carb food options instead.
Tamales are absolute comfort food, but unfortunately, they are a total carb bomb for diabetics. If you are craving Mexican, maybe go for a naked burrito bowl with extra salad and grilled chicken instead. It satisfies the craving without messing up your health!
