Are small red beans the same as kidney beans?

For a new recipe, I need 'small red beans' but can only find kidney beans at my local grocery store. Are small red beans essentially the same as kidney beans, or is there a significant difference in taste or texture?

No, they are totally different! Kidney beans are our classic, thick-skinned Rajma which goes perfectly with rice. Small red beans are much tinier, sweeter, and cook faster; they won't give you that rich, creamy Rajma gravy we all crave.

I once bought small red beans by mistake thinking they were small Kashmiri Rajma. They actually taste quite different and have a milder texture. For my recipes, I always stick to proper dark red kidney beans now.

While they belong to the same legume family, they are not the same. Kidney beans (Rajma) are larger and shaped like a kidney, holding their shape well in long stews. Small red beans are rounder, smaller, and are often used in East Asian desserts or quick soups.

Honestly, I made this mistake in my hostel kitchen last week. I bought small red beans thinking they'd cook like Rajma, but they turned into mush so quickly. Definitely check the packet carefully before buying, guys.

They aren't the same. Small red beans are different and much smaller. If you want to make proper Punjabi Rajma, you strictly need the proper large kidney beans, otherwise the taste and texture will be totally ruined.
