Are small business owners required to provide health insurance?

As I'm setting up my new small business, I'm trying to understand all the legal requirements for employees. Do small business owners in India have a mandatory requirement to provide health insurance to their staff?

Under the current Indian labor laws and ESIC guidelines, it depends heavily on the number of employees you have. If you have more than 10 or 20 employees depending on the state, registering for ESIC is legally mandatory, which provides medical benefits. Consult a legal expert or CA to be absolutely sure of your compliance.

Running a small business is super stressful and leaves no time for self-care. Even if you are not legally required to provide insurance, offering basic wellness benefits or encouraging regular walking and physical exercise for your team can go a long way in keeping everyone healthy.

When my employee had a medical emergency and was admitted to a reputed hospital, I realized how crucial insurance is. Even if there is no strict legal compulsion for very small startups, you should clearly consult a corporate insurance advisor to set up a basic group policy for safety.

I am planning to start a small boutique with 5 workers next month. Do I legally have to provide health insurance to them, or is it optional for such a small team? Pls guide me if anyone knows the exact rules.

I panicked so much when I hired my first few employees, thinking I would face huge fines for not having corporate health insurance. But I found out that for tiny businesses under 10 employees, it is completely optional. Take a deep breath, you can start small and add benefits later!

I run a small digital agency with 8 people. Legally we didn't have to provide insurance under ESIC rules because our team size is small, but we still bought a basic group health policy anyway. It actually helps attract better talent and keeps the team happy.
