Are sleep masks bad for your eyes?

I've been using a sleep mask almost every night to block out light and sleep better. My friend mentioned that they might not be good for eye health in the long run. Can sleep masks actually be bad for your eyes?

My daughter started using a tight sleep mask because her hostel room had bright lights. She developed a stye and eye irritation. I advised her to switch to a loose, 100% cotton mask and wash it every two days. Please make sure it's not pressing hard on the eyeballs.

I literally spend hours researching this because I use one every night! I read that if they are too tight, they can put pressure on your cornea and cause blurry vision in the morning. Just use a very soft, adjustable silk one and wash it constantly to avoid eye infections.

I use a sleep mask because my PCOS sleep disturbances are quite bad. From what I know, they aren't bad for your eyes as long as they are kept extremely clean and aren't putting physical pressure on your eyelids. Try a contoured 3D mask that leaves space for your eyes.

Haan na, if we don't wash the sleep mask regularly, all the sweat and oil will cause eye infections. It is not bad for the eyes itself, but hygiene is super important. Better to buy two masks and use them alternatively, ho na.

A sleep mask is fine if the room is too bright, but naturally calming the mind before bed is much better. Try doing 10 minutes of Bhramari pranayama or simple eye palming in the dark. It relaxes the optic nerves naturally without needing any tight synthetic cloth on your face.

Sleep issues can sometimes be linked to fluctuating blood sugar levels at night. While a sleep mask is harmless if kept clean and loose, do monitor your fasting sugars if you are regularly struggling to sleep. Always mention chronic sleep issues to your physician.

If you are using a sleep mask because of poor sleep, maybe try adding a 30-minute evening walk to your routine first. Physical fatigue naturally improves sleep quality. As for the mask, just ensure it is breathable cotton so it doesn't trap heat around your eyes.
