Are prunes good for diabetics?

My doctor recently advised me to manage my sugar levels more carefully. Someone at the club suggested adding prunes to my diet for general health. I wanted to know if prunes are actually good for someone with diabetes or if I should avoid them.

Honestly speaking, everything we eat needs to be tracked properly. Like how I have to manage my thyroid with regular blood tests every three months, diabetics also need to monitor their levels carefully. Prunes are dried plums so they have concentrated sugar, so it is best to check with your doc before adding them to your daily diet.

Managing insulin issues is so tricky, same as what I face with my PCOS. Prunes have a moderate glycemic index, so they don't spike blood sugar instantly, but too many can definitely cause a rise. I would suggest starting with a very small portion and monitoring your levels to see if it suits you.

I was actually reading up on this yesterday because my uncle has diabetes. From what I found, they have fiber and sorbitol which is good, but they are also dry and sweet. It seems okay in small amounts, but maybe don't go eating a whole handful directly from the pack.

Prunes are slightly expensive in the market anyway, so it is better to plan your diet practically. Instead of spending on fancy dried fruits, check your regular fasting sugar first. Buying a glucometer and testing at home is much more budget-friendly to know what actually suits your sugar levels.

They are quite helpful for constipation, which many diabetics face. But moderation is the key here because they are very sweet. Try having just one prune with some almonds in the morning so the healthy fats keep your sugar stable.

Look, prunes do have a lot of fiber which is great for digestion and slow sugar absorption. But at the end of the day, they are still dried fruits with a high sugar content per serving. Just stick to 1 or 2 pieces max in a day and see how your body reacts, okay?
