Are potatoes ok for diabetics?

My husband was recently diagnosed with diabetes and we are trying to manage his diet. Our doctor asked us to be careful about carbs. Are potatoes still okay for him to eat occasionally, or should we avoid them completely?

I go to a very reputed hospital here for my family's regular health checkups. The specialists there always emphasize that diabetes management is very subjective. Please ask your doctor clearly about how much potato is safe for your specific blood sugar levels.

I have been managing my type 2 diabetes for five years now, and I have to be very careful with starch. Potatoes have a high glycemic index, so they can spike sugar fast. If I ever eat them, I consume only a tiny portion boiled, and always with lots of high-fiber green leafy veggies to slow down absorption.

I agree that we need to be careful with potatoes. Boiling them and cooling them down before eating can sometimes reduce their impact on blood sugar.

Please don't take these dietary questions lightly. I ignored my high sugar symptoms for months, eating whatever I wanted, and ended up in the hospital with severe complications. Get your HbA1c checked properly and let an expert guide you on whether potato fits your current diet plan.

Having thyroid issues has taught me how interconnected our hormones and metabolism are. If you have diabetes or suspect it, please get your blood sugar tests done regularly. It's always best to follow up with your doctor before making any major diet changes like cutting or adding potatoes.

I was looking this up for my dad last week. It seems potatoes aren't completely banned, but they have a lot of simple carbs that can cause spikes. Apparently, sweet potatoes might be a slightly better option, but it's still confusing how much is safe.
