Are mental health issues considered a disability?

My nephew has been struggling with a mental health condition for some time now. We are trying to understand his rights; are mental health issues considered a disability under Indian law or by employers?

Yes, in many countries and even under Indian law now, severe mental illness is recognized as a disability! It is great that the law is finally catching up to support people who need it. 🌟

Honestly, some days my anxiety makes it impossible to even brush my teeth, let alone work. It definitely feels like a major disability when you are in the middle of it. Good to know it is legally recognized though.

Wait, I actually read about this for my sociology class. Under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act in India, chronic mental illness is listed. It's cool because it helps students get accommodations during exams.

If a mental health condition is severely affecting your ability to work or function, you must consult a government psychiatrist. They are the only ones who can evaluate and issue a proper disability certificate under the legal guidelines.
