Are kidney stones genetic?

Both my father and my brother have had kidney stones. This makes me wonder if I'm also at risk. Are kidney stones genetic, or is it just a coincidence in my family?

Yes, they can run in the family, as my father and I both suffered from them. I manage mine now with lots of water and fresh lemon juice daily. But if your family has a history, please get a doctor's advice on what diet changes you should make.

I totally get it, you must be worried if your kids or family members will get it too. Genetics can play a part in how our bodies process minerals. But don't stress too much, lifestyle and hydration matter way more than just family history.

They can be genetic because certain metabolic traits are inherited. I have high blood pressure, and my doctor told me that lifestyle, BP control, and proper diet are crucial to keep kidneys healthy. Make sure to get regular checkups if others in your family have had stones.

I don't know the exact medical science behind it, but in my family, my dad and my elder sister both had kidney stones. I got one too last year. Based on my experience, drinking a lot of water seems to be the only thing that helps us prevent them.

They can be genetic, yes. If your parents had them, it is better to budget for a basic ultrasound and kidney function test once in a while. Private labs often have packages for around 1000-1500 rupees, which is better than paying for expensive emergency treatments later.
