Are kidney beans poisonous?
My MIL was telling me that rajma (kidney beans) can be poisonous if not cooked thoroughly. Is this true, actually? I always cook them properly in the pressure cooker, but now I'm a bit worried if I ever undercook them.

Actually raw kidney beans have a natural toxin that can make u really sick. I once ate half-cooked rajma at a friend's place and ended up with terrible vomiting and stomach cramps for hours. If you've already eaten raw ones and are feeling bad, please see a doctor immediately instead of waiting.
Beta, they are not poisonous at all if you cook them properly. We have been eating rajma chawal for decades in our house. Just make sure to soak them overnight for at least 8 hours, throw that water, and then boil them until they are soft. Don't worry, proper boiling destroys any bad stuff completely.
Raw or undercooked kidney beans contain a lectin called phytohaemagglutinin, which is toxic in raw form. I track all my macros on MyFitnessPal and look up nutritional science often. Just boiling them at 100 degrees Celsius for 10-15 minutes makes them totally safe and packed with healthy protein.
Haan, raw rajma has some toxins that cause severe indigestion, but there is no need to panic. The simple rule is to never cook them on low heat in a slow cooker without boiling them first. Pressure cook them well for 4-5 whistles and they are perfectly healthy and safe to eat.
Oh god, I didn't know this! I once made rajma in a slow cooker and felt so bloated and nauseated after eating, I thought it was just regular gas. Did anyone else get a bad stomach after eating slightly firm kidney beans? Now I am scared to cook them at home.
In our family, elders always say to soak any kind of beans thoroughly to remove the gas-forming agents and impurities. But for the scientific toxin part, my family doctor also confirmed that only raw beans are harmful. Raw rajma shouldn't be consumed, but fully cooked ones are absolutely fine.
