Are fruit smoothies ok for diabetics?

Making fruit smoothies for a quick snack or breakfast is something I really enjoy. My doctor told me to be careful with my sugar intake as I have diabetes. Are fruit smoothies generally okay for diabetics, as long as I use natural ingredients?

I go to Fortis for my regular checkups and my endocrinologist strictly advised against fruit smoothies. Blending destroys the fiber, leading to sudden glucose spikes. You should definitely check with your doctor before consuming them.

Pure fruit smoothies are generally not recommended for diabetics due to the high fructose concentration and lack of intact fiber. However, if you include low-sugar berries and plenty of green vegetables, it might be manageable. It's best to consult your clinical nutritionist.

Please be careful, I used to have banana smoothies thinking they were healthy and ended up with dangerously high sugar levels and kidney strain. Do not experiment with liquid fruit diets without proper medical advice and regular sugar monitoring.

I see this question a lot here! Generally, it is much safer to eat a whole orange or apple than to drink it in a smoothie. Chewing releases sugar slowly into your bloodstream. If you are really craving a smoothie, keep the portions very small and monitor your levels.

I've managed my type 2 diabetes for 10 years now. Standard fruit smoothies will absolutely spike your sugar. If you want a smoothie, make it with unsweetened almond milk, mostly spinach/cucumber, chia seeds, and only a quarter cup of berries.
